For some kids, it was the boogie man under the bed. For some kids, it was Santa Claus in the mall during Christmas time. For some kids (like my 20-year-old college roommate), it was the Chick-Fil-A Cow at college sporting events (sorry, Jojo).  

Growing up, we all have nightmares that become cemented in our minds. Whether it’s because we watched a spooky TV show before bed one night, or heard a scary story on the playground at school one day, our minds took that frightening experience and ran with it so determinedly that we believed the nightmare was true. The only way to undo that, and get rid of your boogie man, is to face it head-on. To get up, and look under your bed – or in your closet. The only way to overcome it is to shine a light on it, see for yourself that it never existed and that you had nothing to fear! 

Staring at those three little letters “SEO” can seem a bit daunting, especially to entrepreneurs and beginning bloggers.  

It’s time to get up and shed a light on that sucker. Education and action will free you from your fear…and from anything that might be holding you back in your pursuit of making a greater impact on the world! 

Grab your flashlight (a.k.a. a piece of paper), and roll up your sleeves (a.k.a. your favorite pen). Let’s pull back the curtain on SEO and replace those nightmares with sweet dreams, K, bb?!

The Definition of SEO

Search Engine Optimization is the practice of intentionally formatting your website or blog post content so that it receives more attention in search results. The idea being as follows: as your content appears higher in search engine results, more high-quality, organic traffic will be sent to your site.

Which is pretty freakin’ sweet, right?!

When you think of the term “search engine”, odds are Google is the first thing that comes to your mind. It makes total sense. After all, Google is the world’s largest search engine with well over 60,000 searches per second; however, GOOGLE is NOT the world’s ONLY search engine. There are other search engines and search-based platforms, some of which you’ve probably used within the last 30-minutes:

1. Youtube

2. Pinterest

3. Bing

4. Yahoo

5. Amazon

Each platform has a different way to optimize the content shown on that platform. For example: optimizing a blog post to rank in Google is different than optimizing a video to rank in Youtube, which looks different than optimizing a pin on Pinterest (more on Pinterest later).
