Okay bb, let’s talk about branding your blog.
Now the word brand has quite a few definitions. Back in the day farmers would brand their cattle by searing a unique mark in their hide, which would indicate to other farmers who the animal belonged to. Which honestly sounds pretty terrible, but here we are!
In blogging, the word branding is the process of creating symbols and unique elements that others can easily recognize your blog by. You’d be surprised all that goes into branding. From logos, fonts and colors, to tone of voice and everything else in between.
Branding your blog is what will help people recognize it! It’s what will make your website look SUPER PRO, even if you’re just starting out.
I could talk about the integral components of branding ALL DAY LONG, but for now, I’m simply going to highlight the things you really need to know in order to brand your blog.
This is the symbol your blog will be recognized by. A logo can be a shape, image, or simply words spelled out in a specific font. There are many ways to create a logo, or have one created for you. I recommend either hiring a graphic designer through a site like Fiverr, or a graphic designer whose work you admire to create one for you. In my opinion, a professional logo is always a worthwhile investment.
Since a blog is so heavily reliant on text, choosing fonts that is easy to read and go well together is key. Steer far away from any overly cursive looking fonts that may be hard for some visitors to read as it could hinder them from really connecting with what valuable information you share. You will need to choose two fonts:
HEADER TEXT FONT: This will be the larger font you will use on various headers in your posts and on your website.
NORMAL TEXT FONT: This will be the font for all regular text written on your website. I don’t recommend going smaller than 14pt.
Pinterest also has some great font combinations! Visit my Branding Inspiration Board on Pinterest to see some stellar font combinations! You can even purchase cool fonts from sites like Etsy or find complimentary fonts from sites like Dafont. There are plenty of free fonts available in various blogging platforms as well. My encouragement to you is to find fonts on platforms like Weebly AND STICK TO THEM!
Consistency in fonts will make a huge difference in your brand’s presentation.
These are the colors that will be seen most frequently on your blogs website and social media platforms. The color pallet will also help you choose the colors of the links on your website, and the call to action buttons that you’ll create.
To select a color palette, I want you to do a fun little activity. Go to any hardware stores paint section, and choose 6 colors that most “represent you”. Then, I want you to make a combination of 4 of those colors that go together the best.
As an alternative, you can hire a professional designer to brand your blog. They will help you choose color pallets, fonts, logos, stock images etc. Fiverr is a great place to search for designers as well.
Photography is a game changer. I strongly recommend hiring a professional photographer and do a photoshoot. Have a diverse range of photos. Perhaps a few of you looking at the camera and smiling, some of you typing/writing or performing an activity correlated to your blogs topic.
Honestly, great photography will launch your blog further than only words ever could. People LOVE to see you, so show them who you are!
Last, but not least, let’s talk about:
Your brand voice is the “speaking tone” of your blog. It is the vibe of your online oasis, and can be sensed in every call to action button, blog post, about page etc.
When deciding your brand voice, I want you to think about how you want people to feel when they read your content. What energy do you hope to convey?
